The Fix Review - WARRIOR WISEWOMAN 2

The Fix gives a great review to the SF anthology Warrior Wisewoman 2 edited by Roby James:

"Though almost no story is "about" the theme, and there is no individual story whose impact would have been lessened by being read outside the context of this anthology, the mere collection of stories with female protagonists is enough to provide a refreshingly different reading experience. It's not that there is some single female element these stories uniformly provide, but merely that focusing on female protagonists exposes us to a wide range of voices and character types that are more rarely explored in other venues." —Ziv Wities, The Fix (8-25-09)

The Green Man Review - WARRIOR WISEWOMAN

Michael Jones at The Green Man Review reviews the SF anthology Warrior Wisewoman edited by Roby James:

"Initially, I figured that the logical science fiction companion to something like Sword and Sorceress would involve rocketships, rayguns, and bug-eyed aliens, only with strong female protagonists . . . space opera meets Ripley from Aliens, basically. Instead, it seems that editor Roby James has gone for something far different. I wanted to make that clear up front. What you'll find here is not "classic" science fiction, and certainly not the feminine (or feminist) flipside to Heinlein, Asimov, or E.E. "Doc" Smith. It's introspective, spiritual, experimental, and in some cases downright oblique. But does the collection work? Let's take a closer look at some of the stories . . ."

SF Revu Review - WARRIOR WISEWOMAN

Colleen Cahill at SF Revu reviews the SF anthology Warrior Wisewoman edited by Roby James:

"Anthologies focusing on women are not new; the Sword and Sorceress series begun by Marion Zimmer Bradley is the first that jumps to mind. When I got Warrior WiseWoman, edited by Roby James, I thought it was the same, but don't let the cover fool you. While intended to be a sister volume to Sword and Sorceress, it differs in that the focus is science fiction instead of fantasy. An ambitious goal, one that has a good start with stories that not only have women protagonists, but also complex plots and good writing..."

AS if! Review - WARRIOR WISEWOMAN

"Warrior Wisewoman is an anthology of twelve SF stories featuring female protagonists or, at least, making some statements on the female condition. It also contains an introduction by the editor, Roby James, which lays out a history of the changing societal attitudes to female protagonists in science fiction. In the context of this introduction, I find it interesting that the anthology is identified as an SF collection, while the title chosen (with its arguably tribal overtones) is perhaps more reminiscent of the fantasy genre..."

Library Journal Review - WARRIOR WISEWOMAN

"The 12 stories in this collection, intended as an sf companion of the late Marion Zimmer Bradley's classic "Sword and Sorceress" series, feature women protagonists as they take on the roles of either warrior or wisewoman-or both-to cope with their surroundings and find their inner truths... Suitable for most sf or short story collections." -- Library Journal

WARRIOR WISEWOMAN - Review - The Fix

Here is the first incoming review of the upcoming science fiction anthology Warrior Wisewoman edited by Roby James, this one in the online magazine The Fix:

"In the introduction to Warrior Wisewoman, editor Roby James explains that the anthology is meant to offer stories with strong female protagonists—not characters that could as easily be male as female, but strong women, whose gender informs their actions but does not define them. It seeks to show women protagonists who are both strong and wise..."

PRESS RELEASE: New Anthology Series: Warrior Wisewoman

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Norilana Books is proud to announce a new annual anthology series of science fiction featuring powerful and remarkable women, Warrior Wisewoman, to be edited by Roby James. The first volume is scheduled to be published under the Norilana Books Science Fiction imprint, in trade paperback format, in 2008.

Warrior Wisewoman is intended as a sister volume to the Sword and Sorceress fantasy series, with the main difference being that the story themes will involve science fiction instead of fantasy, and will be intended for a more mature audience.

Editor Roby James says:

"I am looking for stories that shed light on the truth of what it means to be female, that illuminate the wisdom and the strength of a woman.... I love action and adventure, grand space opera, thrilling discovery, and intelligent protagonists.... The stories should contain the question of 'what if' on some level. And they should have a woman answer it."
